According to latest podcast statistics, 144 million Americans listen to podcasts. Put another way, that’s a whopping 51% of the US population who have tuned in to a pod (Convince and Convert).
Amazing, right? But the growth of podcasts has certainly not come overnight.
Just how many listeners are there?
With the advent of broadband and portable digital audio playback devices such as the iPod, podcasting began to catch hold in late 2004 and grew from there. By 2020, the number of podcast listeners worldwide amounted to 332.2 million people. This number leapt up by 15% to 383.7 million in 2021, and further increases are projected for 2022 and beyond.
Is it any wonder they are so popular when we are so spoiled for choice? With well over 48 million episodes available across the world, there really is something for everyone (podcastinsight.com).
A market so promising that everyone wants a piece
Amazon acquired podcast startup Wondery in late 2020. The sale was estimated to be worth between $300-$400 million. A tall price, but one that Amazon was willing to pay to become a player in the podcast market. That has to tell you something about the opportunities this medium offers.
Podcasts for businesses
Businesses are adapting quickly to using podcasts in their strategy, including those in the life science space. While the time and resource required to run their own podcast might not be feasible, many leaders and marketers are leveraging the opportunities of featuring in other people’s pods.
Why? Well, being a podcast guest simply rocks! It is a great platform for communicating in-depth messages (something that is much more difficult on other channels where bitesize content is king), positioning yourself as a thought leader and getting your brand in front of potential clients.
All this, while also giving you brilliant, highly-shareable content that can be repurposed across your channels to improve your digital networking capabilities, reach new demographics, boost your SEO ranking and so much more.
